Eric Kim is an international street photography teacher.
오랫동안 사진을 찍으면서 결국 배우게 된 것들을 100가지로 간추렸다합니다



1. Just because someone has an expensive camera doesn't mean that they're a good photographer.
비싼 카메라 있다고 사진 잘 찍는 게 아니다.

2. Always shoot in RAW. Always.
꼭 RAW로 찍어라. 꼭!

3. Prime lenses help you learn to be a better photographer.
단렌즈로 찍으면, 사진 공부 많이 된다.

4. Photo editing is an art in itself
디지털 보정, 포토샵 못한다고 하지말고, 배워라. 그것도 하나의 예술이다.

5. The rule of thirds works 99% of the time.
화면 3분할의 원칙은 예외일 때도 있지만, 염두하고 찍으면 99%는 더 좋은 사진이 나온다.

6. Macro photography isn't for everybody.
접사는 아무나 하는 게 아니다. (적성에 안 맞을 수 있다)

7. UV filters work just as well as lens caps.
UV필터는 렌즈 보호용이라고 생각하고 하나 사서 꼭 끼워.

8. Go outside & shoot photos rather than spending hours a day on photography forums.
에셀알클럽 그만 좀 들어오고 나가서 사진 좀 찍어.

9. Capture the beauty in the mundane and you have a winning photograph.
명소 찾아다니지 말고, 일상 속에서 아름다운 장면을 발견해서 찍어봐. 그게 정말 멋진 사진이야.

10. Film isn't better than digital.
이제 필름이 디지털보다 더 좋다고 할 이유가 별로 없어.

 


11. Digital isn't better than film.
근데, 또 디지털이라고 해서 필름보다 엄청 좋은 사진을 만들어주는 건 또 아니지.

12. There is no "magic" camera or lens.
막 찍어도 잘 나오는 카메라, 막 찍어도 작품 되는 렌즈.. 그런 건 없다.

13. Better lenses don't give you better photos.
비싼 렌즈 산다고 좋은 사진이 당장 나오는 건 아니야.

14. Spend less time looking at other people's work and more time shooting your own.
남의 사진 구경할 시간에 나가서 니 사진을 찍어라.

15. Don't take your DSLR to parties.
친구들이랑 노는 데 무거운 장비 다 챙겨서 가지 좀 마.

16. Girls dig photographers.
여자들은 사진 찍어주면 좋아한다.

17. Making your photos b/w doesn't automatically make them "artsy"
사진을 흑백으로 바꾸고는 예술 사진 됐다고 착각하지 마.

18. People will always discredit your work if you tell them you "photoshop" your images. Rather, tell them that you process them in the "digital darkroom".
사람들한테 니 사진 뽀샵했다고 하면 다들 속으로 욕할 거야. 그러니까 "디지털 암실"에서 작업했다고 멋있게 말해.

19. You don't need to take a photo of everything.
놓치는 거 없이 다 찍겠다고 너무 난리치지 마.

20. Have at least 2 backups of all your images. Like they say in war, two is one, one is none.
사진 원본 파일은 최소 2장 이상 복사해서 백업해. 전쟁에서 하는 말이 있다. 두 개는 한 개나 다름없고, 한 개는 없는 거나 마찬가지.

 



21. Ditch the neck strap and get a handstrap.
넥스트랩 안 좋아. 핸드스트랩 안 썼으면 써 봐.

22. Get closer when taking your photos, they often turn out better.
찍을 때 조금만 더 가까이 다가가서 찍어봐. 사진이 더 좋아질 때가 많다.

23. Be a part of a scene while taking a photo; not a voyeur.
사진을 찍으면서도 그 현장에 참여해. 그림자처럼 구경꾼에 머물지 말고.

24. Taking a photo crouched often make your photos look more interesting.
맨날 서서 찍지 말고, 앉아서 찍어보고, 엎드려서 찍어봐. 사진이 훨씬 재밌어지지.

25. Worry less about technical aspects and focus more on compositional aspects of photography.
카메라 다루는 거, 기술적인 거에 너무 신경쓰지 말고, 지금 뷰파인더에 보이는 이미지를 어떻게 구성할지에 더 신경을 쓰도록 해.

26. Tape up any logos on your camera with black gaffers tape- it brings a lot less attention to you.
비싼 신제품 카메라 써? 로고를 검정테이프로 가려봐. 사람들이 덜 쳐다봐서 좋다.

27. Always underexpose by 2/3rds of a stop when shooting in broad daylight.
대낮에 밖에서 찍을 때 2/3 스탑 내려서 찍어. 화이트홀 빵꾸 방지용으로.

28. The more photos you take, the better you get.
많이 찍으면 찍을수록 사진은 느는 거야.

29. Don't be afraid to take several photos of the same scene at different exposures, angles, or apertures.
똑같은 장면도 노출을 바꾸고, 앵글을 바꾸고, 조리개 바꿔가면서 여러 장 찍어봐.

30. only show your best photos.
다 찍은 다음에 막 올리지 말고, 진정 작품으로 생각하는 소중한 사진만 공개해.



31. A point-and-shoot is still a camera.
자동 모드 무시하나요? 자동으로 찍어도 카메라다.

32. Join an online photography forum.
에셀알클럽 같은 곳에는 정말 좋은 자료가 많아. 인터넷을 활용해.

33. Critique the works of others.
다른 사람 작품에서 아쉬운 면을 날카로운 눈으로 비평해보자.

34. Think before you shoot.
막 찍지 말고, 찍기 전에 어떤 사진을 찍고 싶은지 한 번 생각하고 찍자.

35. A good photo shouldn't require explanation (although background information often adds to an image). *
좋은 사진은 설명이 필요없는 사진이지. (물론 사진을 찍게 된 상황 설명 등등은 도움이 될 수 있지만, 기본적으로는 그래.)

36. Alcohol and photography do not mix well.
술 먹고 사진 찍는 거 별로더라.

37. Draw inspiration from other photographers but never worship them.
다른 사람 사진에서 영감을 얻는 건 좋은데, 너무 숭배하지는 말고.

38. Grain is beautiful.
사진 노이즈가 뭐 어때서? 노이즈는 아름답다!

39. Ditch the photo backpack and get a messenger bag. It makes getting your lenses and camera a whole lot easier.
배낭형 카메라 가방을 갖다버리고, 옆으로 메는 거 마련해. 그래야 바로 꺼내서 찍기 편해.

40. Simplicity is key.
심플한 사진을 추구해!

 



41. The definition of photography is: "painting with light." Use light in your favor.
사진은 "빛으로 그린다"는 뜻이야. 빛을 잘 다루어야해.


42. Find your style of photography and stick with it.
나만의 사진 스타일은 뭘까? 그걸 찾아, 그리고 계속 연습해.

43. Having a second monitor is the best thing ever for photo processing.
집에서 사진 보정 맨날 하니? 그렇다면 제일 먼저 사야할 건 두번째 모니터!

44. Silver EFEX pro is the best b/w converter.
해봤는데 흑백사진은 포토샵에 silver EFEX pro 플러그인 까는 게 제일 좋더라.

45. Carry your camera with you everywhere. Everywhere.
카메라는 작은 거든 큰 거든 항상 가지고 다녀! 항상!

46. Never let photography get in the way of enjoying life.
그렇지만 정말 즐겨야할 삶의 순간에 카메라를 내려놓고 즐길줄도 알아야해.

47. Don't pamper your camera. Use and abuse it.
카메라 애지중지하지마. 닳도록 막 써!

48. Take straight photos.
있는대로 본대로 표현하는 사진찍기를 먼저 연습해.

49. Shoot with confidence.
자신감을 가지고 찰칵!

50. Photography and juxtaposition are best friends.
사진의 반은 네모 안에 뭐 어떻게 배치하느냐의 문제!



51. Print out your photos big. They will make you happy.
맘에 드는 사진 엄청 크게 인화해봤어? 진짜 기분 좋다, 꼭 해봐.

52. Give your photos to friends.
사진 찍으면 친구들한테 보내줘.

53. Give them to strangers.
첨 보는 사람한테 사진을 선물해보자!

54. Don't forget to frame them.
선물할 땐 꼭 액자에 넣어서 말야!

55. Costco prints are cheap and look great.
찍스, 코스트코 인화 싸고 괜찮아.

56. Go out and take photos with (a) friend(s).
친구들 데리고 나가서 사진 찍어봐

57. Join a photo club or start one for yourself.
인터넷 모임에 가입해보거나, 블로그 시작해봐!

58. Photos make great presents.
사진은 정말 좋은 선물!

59. Taking photos of strangers is thrilling.
낯선 사람의 사진을 찍는다는 건 스릴있어!

60. Candid>Posed.
포즈 사진보다 지연스러운 캔디드 포토가 더 낫지.

 



61. Natural light is the best light.
조명 중 최고는 역시 자연광!

62. 35mm (on full frame) is the best "walk-around" focal length.
풀프레임 기준 스냅용으로는 35미리 단렌즈 추천!

63. Don't be afraid to bump up your ISO when necessary.
노이즈 때문에 떨지 말고 필요하면 iso 팍팍 올려!

64. You don't need to always bring a tripod with you everywhere you go (hell, I don't even own one).
삼각대를어떻게 맨날 들고 다니니? (사실 난 하나도 없음 ㅋㅋ)

65. It is always better to underexpose than overexpose.
너무 밝게 찍는 것보단 어둡게 찍는 게 낫다.

66. Shooting photos of homeless people in an attempt to be "artsy" is exploitation.
노숙자 찍어놓고 예술 사진 찍었다고 우기지 마. 그건 인간착취다.

67. You will find the best photo opportunities in the least likely situations.
가장 우연한 순간에 가장 최고의 사진을 찍을 수 있는 기회가 오곤 하지.

68. Photos are always more interesting with the human element included.
사람이 있는 사진이 없는 사진보다 더 재밌더라고.

69. You can't "photoshop" bad images into good ones.
원본이 안 좋은데 포토샵 한다고 좋아질 수는 없어.

70. Nowadays everybody is a photographer.
요즘은 모두가 사진가라고 할 수 있지.




71. You don't need to fly to Paris to get good photos; the best photo opportunities are in your backyard.
좋은 사진 찍으려고 유럽 여행을 갈 필요는 없어. 뒷마당에서도 좋은 사진은 가능해.

72. People with DSLRS who shoot portraits with their grip pointed downwards look like morons.
DSLR 로 세로 사진 찍을 때 오른손을 땅쪽으로 하고 셔터 누르는 사람.. 좀 멍청한 거 아니니?

73. Cameras as tools, not toys.
카메라는 장난감이 아니야. 도구지.

74. In terms of composition, photography and painting aren't much different.
적어도 구도에 관해서는, 사진과 그림이 크게 다르지 않은 거 같아.

75. Photography isn't a hobby- it's a lifestyle.
사진은 취미가 아냐. 라이프스타일이야.

핑계대지 말고, 사진으로 증명해봐

77. Be original in your photography. Don't try to copy the style of others.
독창적인 사진을 추구해. 다른 사람 따라하려고 하지 말고.

79. Any cameras but black ones draw too much attention.
카메라는 검은 색이 좋더라. 다른 색은 너무 튀는 거 같아.

80. The more gear you carry around with you the less you will enjoy photography.
장비가 무거워질수록, 사진이 고통스러워진다.

 



81. Good self-portraits are harder to take than they seem.
자기 모습을 사진을 담는 거, 그거 생각보다 쉽지 않다.

82. Laughter always draws out peoples' true character in a photograph.
사진에 사람들 웃는 모습을 담아봐. 그 사람의 진면목을 알 수 있어.

83. Don't look suspicious when taking photos- blend in with the environment.
수상한 사람처럼 얼쩡거리지 말고, 사진 찍는 장소에 자연스럽게 섞여들어가서 찍어.

84. Landscape photography can become dull after a while.
풍경사진은 계속 보면 금방 지루해지지.

85. Have fun while taking photos.
사진 찍을 때, 즐겁게 찍어.

86. Never delete any of your photos.
사진 지우지 마!

87. Be respectful when taking photos of people or places.
사람이나 장소를 찍을 때, 늘 겸손한 자세로 찍어.

88. When taking candid photos of people in the street, it is easier to use a wide-angle than a telephoto lens.
거리에서 캔디드 포토를 시도할 때, 망원보다는 화각이 넓은 렌즈를 사용하도록 해.

89. Travel and photography are the perfect pair.
여행이라면 사진이 빠질 수 없지.

90. Learn how to read a histogram
히스토그램 정도는 볼 줄 알아야 해.




91. A noisy photo is better than a blurry one.
흔들린 사진보다는 노이즈가 많은 사진이 낫다.
